VOY, 304: The Swarm

  • Helmsman's Log? *Helmsman's* Log? Can they even DO that? 😮
  • Tom is trying to flirt with B'elanna in the shuttle but he's being a teenager about it. B'elanna is much more direct. Introducing this relationship is one of the better choices Voyager makes. You know the theory that the first two seasons of a Trek series are always rough? I think what's going on is that they always start a new series with a plan that copies elements from previous series, but lots of those elements don't work out with new actors in a new context. So seasons 1 and 2 emphasized Tom and Harry as friends, which was basically just OK, but too closely cribbed from the Geordi-Data or Julian-Miles friendships on TNG and DS9 and ultimately inorganic. But Tom & B'elanna emerges organically from the actors' portrayals of those characters.
  • The Swarm aliens don't have a comprehensible language, or even mouths -- this makes them much more alien, and puts them much more clearly in the "enemy" category, than the typical aliens we encounter. In fact the conflict with them is pretty tangential to the episode.
  • The Doctor is learning to perform opera. Neelix asked the Doctor if he was programmed to sing back in "Phage" and Denara Pel asked about him dancing in "Lifesigns." Now he's singing with a hologram but music will become a big part of how the Doctor expresses intimacy and individuality. I'll also note how the holo-diva complains about the Doctor's lack of expression in how he performs, because not only does this contrast with how Data developed his own style of playing violin by synthesizing two radically different styles but did not believe in his own originality, but this idea of music performed mechanically versus with personal expression will become important in the future for the Doctor (particularly in "Virtuoso")
  • The Doctor mentions pre-ganglionic fibers while he's in a state of confusion -- this is probably a deliberate reference to Julian Bashir on DS9, but it's also rather empty
  • The Doctor, in grand Starfleet tradition, offers to sacrifice his personality for the greater good. But he also gives up too easily, as is usual on a show driven by dramatic tension.
  • Like in "Parallax" it's time for more physical comedy with the Doctor.
  • Louis Zimmerman -- this portrayal predates "Doctor Bashir, I Presume". A yellow uniform and messed up hair to distinguish him from the EMH. The Zimmerman hologram still refers to the Doctor as "it".
  • Janeway uses the older "snuck" while Paris uses the more modern "sneaked." This is not significant, just interesting
  • This episode avoids the mistake a lot of "sick crewman" episodes make, by keeping the afflicted member awake and aware while afflicted. Contrast "Man of the People" or "Invasive Procedures" where the person in trouble is comatose or otherwise silent despite the episode being centered around them (I'd also ask you to recall "Shades of Gray" but nobody should have to recall that episode)
  • "Keep his neural pathways active" -- Mental stimulation is important to slowing memory loss in people with Alzheimer's Disease
  • Like in "Projections" we return to the moment of the Doctor's "birth" in "Caretaker"
  • That same willingness to self-sacrifice is present in the Diagnostic Hologram, but the Diagnostic hasn't gone through any process of individuation and so doesn't have any hesitation about the idea
  • It's a little weird how the supporting role shifts from B'elanna early in the episode to Kes, who has more of an emotional connection with the Doctor, later on, but it follows how the Doctor's issue goes from being seen as a mechanical one to a psychological one

  1. The average age is relatively older (+35) and the variety of users beneath age 25 is low. Social Casino video games have essentially the most stable demographic information, with close to equal splits of female and male users properly as|in addition to} a younger person base. Poker / Cards 솔카지노 have a higher male person base and a comparatively younger average age of gamers.
