I am now an associate member of the Science Fiction Writers of America!
My member profile and my much prettier entry in the SFWA Speaker's Bureau.
SFWA makes a pretty decent case for itself for joining. To this I'll add: my instinct always is to engage with whatever collective representation I can find. The people who create all the good things society are always stronger when they act together -- this doesn't just go for factory workers or miners. In the media-driven USA the WGA is one of the most powerful and prominent voices for creators' rights and in solidarity with those attacked and abused by the wealthy. SFWA isn't exactly a union, but it's a bit of united voice. That's important, when writing can be such a lonely task.
